1. (a) What are the components of von-Neumann architecture ? How do you construct a von-Neumann machine using Integrated Circuit chips ? Propose mechanisms to overcome the von-Neumann bottleneck.
(b) (i) Why do you need external interfaces in computers ?
(ii) Compare and contrast the features of Random Access Memories and Read
Only Memories.
(iii) what is a Supercomputer ? Where can it be used?
(c) What is Graphical User Interface ? What are the advantages /disadvantages of Windows based systems ?
(d) What is meant by the term "Communication Channels" ? What are the factors that affect the choice of right communication media ? Describe a popular communication media used for local area networks.
(e) What is cryptography? Describe the Data Encryption Standard (DES) for
cryptography. What are the drawbacks of DES ? Is there any better method existing than DES ?
(f) Describe the use of basic elements of a programming language with the help of an example.

(b) What is a distributed operating system ? What are the advantages of distributed operating system ? Compare and contrast the characteristics of distributed operating system with network operating system.
(c) What are the ways by which a user can interact with the operating system ? Explain with the help of example/s.
4. (a) What is the need of having a Local Area Network (LAN) ? Describe the various
characteristics of LAN. Why do you need WANs ? Do WANs have same characteristics as LANs ? Justify your answer.
